CIUDAD DEL ESTE

Ciudad del Este, founded less than 40 years ago, called originally Ciudad Presidente Stroessner, is known for its thriving commercial activity and dependant on its proximity to Brazil separated only by the Parana River and the International Bridge.

It is considered one of the greatest " shopping centers" in South America with all kinds of imported articles, in particular from Asia, mainly in the field of electronics which are offered at very low cost.

With nearly 90 000 inhabitants, Ciudad del Este is one of the significant cities of Paraguay, that has quickly developed thanks to its intense activity and for its proximity to the Paraguayan-Brazilian hydraulic complex, the Itaipu Dam.

Ciudad del Este is the starting point of the excursions to the Iguaçu Falls, located at about thirty kilometers, be it to the Brazilian or Argentine side were the world famous Falls are located.

ITAIPU

ITAIPU The largest Dam of the world.
Built on the Rio Parana, and exploited jointly with Brazil, this hydraulic complex is 225 meters high and has a width of almost 8 kms and allows Paraguay not only to produce its own energy but to even export a large part of it thus generating close to 280 million us dollars per year for its economy.

The Dam comprises an artificial lake with a surface of 200 square kilometres. One can indulge in all kinds of nautical activities there. The lake also shelters a small marina, Puerto Guarani.
