Travels, country and people... The undertaking of a trip to travel through Paraguay is an inexpensive matter and rich in adventures, especially in one of the comfortable interurban buses. Naturally, it is more comfortable to travel by car which, depending on the region, should be a 4 x 4. Although Paraguay has good paved roads leading in all directions, the sideroads of these main routes can be risky to travel on. Whatever part of the Paraguay is visited -including those most remote places - foreigners will always find friendly and hospitable natives and, above all, very accommodating and helpful.. Indeed, one of the high points of any trip to Paraguay should include a visit to a cattle establishment. One can participate in the roundups of animals, see how they are handled in the corrals or when they are branded with red hot irons. During the evenings, sitting around firesides, observing the bright starry sky of the Southern Hemisphere, noticing the great number of birds at sundown - all this constitutes an unforgettable experience. For the following excursions, one needs several days. In all the cases, a visit to the frontier cities of Ciudad del Este or Foz do Iguacú should be included, as well as a visit to the large hydroelectric station of Itaipú and a sightseeing trip to the widest waterfalls of the world (Yguazu) The breathtaking waterfalls (a panorama with an extension of 7 kilometers with wonderful footpaths above the falls) may be appreciated both from the Brazilian or Argentine side, where the borders of Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina come together. For short excursions of one or half a day, a visit to the Ypacarai lake is recommended as on the way it is possible to buy lovely pieces of pottery or pictures of Latin American artists at highly reasonable prices in Aregua. From there, we finally arrive at San Bernardino, a summer resort founded by German immigrants. (During the holiday season between December and March, the city bustles with tourists). When returning to Asuncion, Itaugua, a town where artisan works (fine embroidery, hammocks and other items) are produced, should be also visited. Depending on the available time and the interest, a journey to the Great Chaco, up to the Mennonite Colonies, or a trip to the southern part of the country (fishing excursions at Hohenau or other well known places) should form part of the tour program. In Asuncion, a visit to the large Petti-rossi market and the Jardin Botanico (in summer), must be obligatory on any trip... |
